Dans cette suite, l’auteur a manifestement décidé de se mesurer aux standards actuels du genre, soit la narration multi-points de vue permettant de fournir un éclairage de l’ensemble de l’action.Nous avons en effet droit non seulement aux comptes-rendus du Chroniqueur Royal, Lord Verniers Alishe Someren, qui nous avait accompagné lors de « Blood Song », mais également au point de vue de la Sœur du Roi Marcus du Royaume Unifié, la Princesse Lyrna, celui du Frère Frentis, de Vaelin et d’un nouveau personnage, Reva, qui introduit un zeste de fraicheur dans notre histoire.Il faut en effet signaler que ce roman relate essentiellement l’invasion du Royaume Unifié par l’Empire esclavagiste Volarian. Vous y trouverez donc beaucoup de morceaux de guerre, d’assassinats et de massacres, soyez-en prévenus !Les chroniques de Lord Verniers sont tragiquement comiques, imaginez un historien érudit n’ayant jamais réellement souffert de quoi que ce soit dans sa vie, bombardé hagiographe officiel d’un général Volarian incompétent prêt à le torturer au moindre faux pas.Nous retrouverons enfin le Frère perdu, Frentis, sorte de Jackie Chan médiéval qui vient de passer ces cinq dernières années à combattre comme gladiateur et à atteindre un niveau martial incomparable. Assujetti par un lien magique qui lui a été littéralement gravé sur le corps, Frentis se retrouve contre son gré associé à une femme mystérieuse dont les pouvoirs lié au « Dark » sont considérables.La perfection guerrière de Frentis en fait un personnage sans intérêt, par contre les illusions de sa « maitresse » sont assez réjouissantes.Les aventures de la Princesse Lyrna sont plutôt intéressantes, d’autant plus qu’elles insufflent un peu d’humanité dans un personnage qui apparaissait fort froid. Néanmoins une remarque de la Princesse semble indiquer une évolution récente de son caractère.Un caractère qui ressortira trempé dans une épreuve peu commune dans les fers des esclavagistes.Quant au nouveau personnage de Reva, jeune fille endoctrinée pour assassiner Vaelin, je suis un peu mitigé. Certes son parcours est confus et donc intéressant, le fait qu'elle doive lutter contre un endoctrinement initié très tôt est original en Fantasy.Mais ce qui est pénible reste son niveau d’excellence dans toutes les armes sans qu’un parcours initiatique comme celui de Frentis ou Vaelin ne soit invoqué. Cela fait des personnages dont la perfection est assez ennuyeuse.Reste Vaelin, je trouve que l’auteur a bien réussi à en faire une figure paternaliste, revenue de tout et cherchant à tout prix à éviter la souffrance.Bien entendu, ce ne sera pas possible, en tous cas dans ce tome qui les accumule, les souffrances.Il s’agit pour conclure d’un livre complexe, trop à mon sens, qui devra être précédé d’une relecture de Blood Song T1 La Voix du sang pour s’y retrouver dans l’immense galerie de personnages.Ce livre manque également tout simplement d’un objectif, ce qui faisait la force du premier. Alors oui les batailles sont belles, les personnages souvent bien tissés, mais pour quoi faire ?Pourtant, le talent de l’auteur est bien là, pas de doute il faudra compter sur Anthony Ryan, la seule question étant de savoir si il saura créer des œuvres immortelles ou pas …
